Scotland’s Home of the Year Season 6 Winner - Highlands & Islands
Earth House Scotland was proud and excited to be featured on Season 6 of the popular BBC show; Scotland’s Home of the Year 2024.
Having our house featured on the show felt like the end of a journey and the beginning of a new phase after all the work and energy that went into restoring this beautiful old home.
PITYOULISH [pit-yoo-lish]
noun & adjective (translated from Pictish*)
: bright, beautiful place
* ... people of the north of Scotland who are first noted in historical records in the late third century and who became amalgamated with the Scots in the mid-eighth century.
For almost 300 years the Lodge has seen the comings and goings of seasons, saplings turned to imposing trees, hundreds of generations of red squirrels, otters and deer passing by it.
Freeze and thaw, breeze and bluster, the shadow of golden eagles passing momentarily. Salmon spawn and return, the occasional splash as they leap.
Pityoulish is derived from ancient Pictish* and translates to bright beautiful place; sitting on ley lines, and the site of ancient magic, it is a special place.
We have a sunken garden, a forest and a mile and a half bank of the Spey with two fishing beats comprising 15 named pools.

The Scottish Highlands offers some of the most magnificent landscape in the world.
This stunning Fishing Lodge on the River Spey offers luxury accommodation for you with the start of the North 500 is less than an hour away, begin your day at Pityoulish House, rested and refreshed.

That the Spey is the most iconic fly-fishing river in the world is in little doubt; stunning scenery, snow-clad mountain fed, the cast that changed the angling world, the history of a thousand slain clansmen, warlords and kings tumbling by your feet, castles of ruin and light, a wildlife haven, the best whisky afforded mankind, wild browns to 13lb, the most productive sea-trout fishery in the country and, with its 100 mile journey through the visual splendour of the Scottish Highlands.
Perfectly placed in the upper region of this angling gem flows the Cottage Water on the Spey.
One and half miles - right bank - of pristine runs, deep glides, riffles, shades, easy wading, from the shore casting, ospreys, buzzards, curlews, sand martens, kingfishers, otters et al. Untroubled by public road or footpath.

If you ever wanted to reawaken your childhood wonder and open yourself to the idea of magic; do it in the Scottish Highlands because we have magic everywhere if you have eyes to see it.
Deep in the Pityoulish Loch, just a few steps from the Lodge, legend tells of a kelpie that lives in a crannog waiting to entice unsuspecting children into the water. Selkies, glide quietly spinning their silky yarns as Nessie traverses the largest body of water in the British Isles hidden for centuries to all but a fortunate few.
In Scotland fairies are a matter of fact, flitting from flower to flower deep in forests where trees sway in unison, aware of everything above and beneath; their roots entwined carrying the memories of thousands of years. Scotland is steeped in history, it is a place of oneness and connectedness of all things and of us to the land.
It is a place of wonder where the land has changed so little that you can easily imagine how it might have been a thousand years ago.
